AbstractPervasive plants are a widespread problem but the mechanisms used by these plants to become preponderant are often unknown. The production of phytotoxic natural products by them is one mechanism by which these species may become successful competitors [1]. Stellera chamaejasme L. is a poisonous plant species widely spreading constantly in China western grassland in recent years in case that the serious meadow degradation occurs [2, 3]. Here, we conducted a bioactivity-driven fractionation of root extracts from S. chamaejasme L., and structurally characterized flavonoids and coumarins. We show that these metabolites are phytotoxic but affect plants in different ways, either inducing overall plant necrosis or reducing root branching and elongation. GUS staining analyses of Arabidopsis thaliana Dr5::GUS transgenic line treated by the biflavonoids purified from roots of S. chamaejasme L. show that the endogenous auxin levels at the root tips are largely reduced. The reduction of the accumulation and redistribution influence of endogenous auxin are proposed as a critical factor that resulted in the inhibition of seedling growth and disruption of root system architecture in A. thaliana.
