AbstractIn this work, NaGd(WO4)2: Er3+, Yb3+ nanoparticles with a size of 50–80 nm were prepared by hydrothermal reactions with the assistance of surfactant. The crystal structure, morphology, upconversion spectra, and mechanism were discussed in detail. With the co-doping of Yb3+ in NaGd(WO4)2: Er3+, the visible upconversion intensity is enhanced by ca. 16 times, thanks to the wide absorption band of Yb3+ around 975 nm and efficiency energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+. Based on the log–log plots of the upconversion emission intensities as a function of laser power, two-photon processes are determined to be responsible for both green and red emissions. Furthermore, NaGd(WO4)2: Er3+, Yb3+ upconversion nanoparticles were found to possess paramagnetism, suggesting that this material is promising for bio-imaging and bio-separation applications.
